In the high desert of South America, winter takes hold, devouring bleached bones and abandoned shacks. Into these most inhospitable of lands, a handful of drifters emerge from the whiteout, ready to cast their lot on forsaken peaks both merciless and magnificent. Born in the spires of Argentina’s legendary Las Leñas, a lonely two-year journey begins through an abandoned world, wandering the length of a continent from Peru’s Cordillera Blanca to Chilean Patagonia.

This documentary relates the human experience of Alex Txikon, the Austrian Gerfried Göschl and the Canadian Louis Rousseau, in reaching the summit of the Gasherbrum I or Hidden Peak during the winter of 2011.  For 61 days we will live with the three alpinists and their two Pakistani cooks, showing what life is like and the relationships in the Base Camp and how they take on this powerful mountain, to try and open a new route up the south face with the aim of achieving the first winter ascent of this 8 thousand.

His kindness and enormous charisma hide an unshakeable old-fashioned willpower , which the Italian knows how to combine to perfection with all the communicational challenges which the present sets before him.  It being easy for him to cover the well-trodden paths of Himalayism , Simone Moro decided to re-discover an abandoned path (perhaps judged as impossible ): the wintry ‘super eight thousand’ in the Karakorum. The conquest of the Gasherbrum II in winter, accompanied by Denis Urubko and Cory Richards involves the triumph of perseverance, of bravery and the desire to overcome seemingly insurmountable obstacles. That is, the triumph of the hallmarks of old school alpinism.
